In a relatively short time, Joshua Steele has become something of a Dance Pop/Dubstep poster boy in his native England and is well on his way to similar status in the U.S. The renowned DJ, producer and co-founder of Circus Records, better known by his flashier marquee name Flux Pavilion, came to prominence last year with his big UK hit “Bass Cannon,” and again when producer Shama Joseph sampled his song “I Can’t Stop” for Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album, a sample that raised Steele’s profile to an unimaginable level.
This year, Steele was shortlisted in the BBC’s Sound Poll for 2012, “I Can’t Stop” was used in the controversial KONY 2012 video (exposing the deplorable acts of Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, the video has nearly 90 million views on YouTube) and his new single, “Daydreamer,” featuring Pop sensation Example, is a huge hit after its release just a couple of weeks ago.
In the wild world of Electronic genre identification, Grime begat Sublow which begat Dubstep, which Flux Pavilion has ridden to a rabid cult following and a fair amount of subsequent commercial acceptance. Flux’s chart success has made his current American tour possible, allowing him to work out the logistics necessary to reproduce his Electronic wizardry in the live arena.
Flux has said that he would love to collaborate with The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas and musician/actor/writer/comedian Donald Glover, better known as Childish Gambino, and he’s stated that his greatest desire is to make his fans cry and dance simultaneously. So bring your sturdiest dancing kicks and lots of tissues; Flux Pavilion is looking for your moves and your tears.
