Zion

The son of legendary Country singer Charley Pride, you'd expect Carlton Pride to be popping up at the Grand Ol' Opry and appearing on TNN's Prime Time Country (both of which he has done). But what you probably wouldn't expect is that Carlton's genre of choice isn't C&W, but Reggae. The Texas-based musician and his band, Zion, may not show a lot of Country influence on their latest release, What You Need (except for a truly bizarre father-son duet on the Country classic "Kiss An Angel"), but they prove to be an extremely tight Reggae squad blending Roots and Dance Hall styles for a tasty, beat-heavy mix. The group have been popular on the Reggae circuit, opening for the likes of The Wailers, Pato Baton, Yellowman and Black Uhuru, and they've been a favorite at the numerous Bob Marley celebrations around the country.

At Smokin' Monkey on Saturday.
