Leonardo DiCaprio effectively narrates this 43-minute IMAX 3-D journey into the farthest reaches of outer space. The film follows the astronaut crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on its 2009 rescue mission (named STS-125) to repair the ailing Hubble Space Telescope. We get a rare glimpse into the claustrophobic conditions the astronauts contend with, after two years of preparation, to perform their incredibly difficult technical repairs in 200-below-zero temperatures.
The eye-popping views of space shift into warp drive when the Hubble telescope substitutes for the IMAX camera lens to provide incredibly clear images of galaxies, stars and nebulae millions of light years away. The IMAX screen transforms into the best planetarium you’ve ever experienced as you zip through stars and space dust to get an up-close look at faraway places like the Andromeda Galaxy.
Hubble 3-D is every astronomy lover’s dream. No amount of adjectives can fully express the overwhelming vastness, beauty and richness of colors the Hubble Telescope captures. Grade: B-plus
