Findlay Market is expanding its offerings from being your favorite Cincinnati place to buy fresh produce to being your favorite place to get rid of produce scraps.
The market is launching a new composting program where shoppers can rent a five-gallon bucket to take home to use for their food scraps. They can then drop off the bucket full of organic food waste to the vendor parking lot (off of Race Street and next to the North Parking Lot) 4-8 p.m. Tuesdays.
The program — including bucket rental and bucket cleaning — costs $10 per month or $55 for six months.
Wondering what's OK to put in your compost bucket? Findlay says: produce, coffee grounds, any plant-based waste, eggshells and yard waste.
What is no OK to compost: Meat, dairy, rubber bands, gloves, plastic bags, coffee filters, cutlery or other random foreign objects.
Membership also gets you a free usable mug to use as part of the Mug Club at Findlay Market bars, and earns you a discount off of bags of completed and ready-to-use compost for your garden (available in 2022).
The composting program is part of the Greening the Market initiative and officially launches on July 13 with a party at Jane's Bar (formerly the Biergarten). Jane's will be making "imperfect cocktails," says a release. "The bartenders will make an oleo saccharum and then turn that into a lime cordial with imperfect limes. Bar Associates will also show guests how to make a traditional daiquiri with rum, lime cordial and lime juice."
