One Hocking Hills artist has put a decorative and delicate spin on the traditional fall pumpkin patch.
Jack Pine Studio is hosting the second-annual Glass Pumpkin Festival 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 24 through 26, featuring "hundreds of one-of-a-kind, blown glass pumpkins for sale," says the website. The pumpkins will be displayed in a "patch" on the lawn in front of the studio and feature glass finishes ranging from vibrant color combinations to mother-of-pearl and iridized rainbow patterns.
Glass artist Jack Pine concocted the idea after last year's Circleville Pumpkin Festival was canceled in the wake of COVID-19. In addition to decorative pumpkins, this year's Glass Pumpkin Festival will also include other arts and craft vendors, as well as fest food like pumpkin donuts and pumpkin ice cream, funnel cake, tacos and Texas tenderloin. Visitors can also watch studio glass-blowers at work.
“We had such a wonderful turnout last year, we wanted to continue and build upon this fun and artistic experience,” says artist Pine in a release. “Hundreds and hundreds of unique hand-blown glass pumpkins of every color and size are spread across the field in our outdoor studio to celebrate art and the colors of the season by allowing fans and guests to support creatives."
Pine will also be crafting a special 2021 Pumpkin of the Year, made of "luminous white glass with gleaming silver strands...illuminated by a confetti of colors."
In the release, Pine says he "designed this year’s Pumpkin of the Year to truly reflect the joy of creativity of Mardi Gras and of supporting others," and will be donating 10% of all Pumpkin of the Year sales to the Feed the Second Line charity to help those in New Orleans recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Ida. Feed the Second Line supports the city's artists and musicians, particularly those associated with Mardi Gras and Second Line events, via food, shelter and more.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, only 75 guests will be admitted to the Glass Pumpkin Festival for each two-hour time slot. Parking payment is required in advance and costs $5, which can then be applied to the purchase of any pumpkin. The Jack Pine Studio compound consists of several acres of outdoor space, an outdoor studio, an indoor gallery and a demonstration studio.
