Everyone is excited for the Bengals to play in Super Bowl LVI this Sunday, even the zookeepers at the Cincinnati Zoo.
To show their excitement and support for the team, keepers named one of the five-week-old penguin chicks after the Bengals' star player.
“Cup O’ Joe Burrow” (Cup O’ Joe, officially) was chosen because while the bird team typically names penguins after food, they still wanted to evoke the excitement of the Bengals season, the zoo said.
“Cup O’ Joe Burrow has a nice ring to it and fits the theme,” said Cincinnati Zoo’s head bird keeper Cody Sowers in a statement.
Keepers say each of the penguins in the zoo’s habitat has a color-coded ID band to help them differentiate the over 30 birds, and Cup O’ Joe will be getting an orange and black one.
“The chick and the quarterback have more in common than just their obvious good looks,” said senior bird team keeper Aimee Owen in a release. “This chick has been a great leader since Dey 1. He’s always communicating his game plan to the entire team, and the plan is always eating and sleeping. Little blue penguins and QB Burrow are both good swimmers but can’t fly, and they know how to survive in extreme environments — Arrowhead Stadium and the rocky cliffs of New Zealand.”
Cup O’ Joe will be introduced to the main habitat and visitors in the spring, and the zoo has invited Joe Burrow to meet his baby penguin counterpart any time.
