The Cincinnati Public Schools district has selected its new permanent leader.
During a Feb. 28 meeting, the district's board of education tapped Iranetta Wright as CPS's next superintendent Wright's appointment follows a national search and the interim tenure of Tianay Amat since May.
Wright currently is the deputy superintendent in the Detroit Public Schools Community District, Michigan's largest school district. According to a press release from CPS, Wright previously had spent more than 25 years at Duval County Public Schools in Florida and has earned numerous education awards.
"We're going to hit the ground running to learn, grow and develop together. Let's get to work," Wright said in a release.
"We believe we have chosen the best candidate, one who is committed to transformative, positive change for our students, community and staff," said Ben Lindy, CPS School Board president, added.
Wright will become Cincinnati Public Schools' 28th superintendent. The previous district leader was Laura Mitchell, who left her CPS post in May to become the president and CEO of Beech Acres Parenting Center. Mitchell had been superintendent since 2017 and employed by the district for 27 years. Under her leadership, CPS enrollment grew from 64.3% to 68.5%.
Upon Mitchell's departure, Amat stepped in as the district's interim superintendent. Amat is the CPS deputy superintendent, supervising school leadership and overseeing the curriculum, early childhood, testing, and accountability and research departments.
The release from CPS does not state when Wright will begin working within the district.
CPS serves nearly 36,000 students and is the largest public school system in Southwest Ohio, a release says.
