After taking two years off due to the pandemic, a beloved home-cooked tradition is back in Camp Washington.

On April 10, Sacred Heart Church is hosting its popular ravioli dinner. Since 1911, the church has been offering old-fashioned, Italian-recipe ravioli dinners made by parishioners and volunteers using recipes brought to Cincinnati from the Old Country.

Doors open at 9 a.m. and food will be served until 5 p.m. or until it runs out. Patrons can start lining up before the doors open. This year's event will be carry-out only and all the dinners will be frozen (except for the cheese).

Each $15  box includes 50 homemade ravioli. You can also grab 10 hand-rolled meatballs for $10, a quart of homemade tomato sauce for $10 and a container of grated cheese for $5. Bring cash or check; no credit cards will be accepted.

Ralph Di Fulvio, media relations for the event, tells CityBeat the team of 40 volunteers will be making 1,600 boxes of ravioli (or 80,000 individual pieces), plus 12,000 meatballs and 1,200 quarts of frozen sauce all "using our 111-year-old recipes." Di Fulvio says more than 3,000 people attend this event annually.

"It feels great to be able to do this for the church and the community," he says. "We are hoping to be able to have a sit-down dinner in October."

In pre-pandemic times, the ravioli fundraiser has taken place twice a year with options for carry-out and indoor dining. Proceeds help fund the operating costs of the church, Di Fulvio says, and also reinvest in the kitchen itself.

Sacred Heart Church is the home base of the local Order Sons & Daughters of Italy chapter. Di Fulvio says they host their monthly meetings there, so one can expect a whole bunch of authentic, nonna-approved eats to be coming out of the parish's kitchen and into your own.

Sacred Heart Church is located at 2733 Massachusetts Ave., Camp Washington. Get more info at sacredheartcincinnati.com.
