JMR’s Greatest Hits at Music Hall (April 29-May 1)
Cincinnati Pops Orchestra marks a decade with conductor John Morris Russell in the only way a symphony can properly celebrate: a musical performance extravaganza. According to their website, Pops is “celebrating 10 years of JMR by pulling out all the stops — and the stars! The Twunny Fo' at Know Theatre (April 29-May 1)
The Twunny Fo', currently onstage at Know Theatre, is a workplace comedy about a convenience store — “The 24,” open 24/7 — and a group of employees who are resentful about working there, especially since its acquisition by a company that operates numerous locations. Playwright A.J. Baldwin lays out in fast-talking contemporary jargon how each employee feels about their co-workers, several unseen customers, the around-the-clock work schedule, the corporate owner and the gentrifying neighborhood. Cincy Seltzer Fest at Fowling Warehouse
Things are about to get real bubbly at Fowling Warehouse thanks to the second annual Cincy Seltzer Fest, which brings a huge assortment of the fizzy, boozy beverages together for attendees to sample and celebrate. There will be plenty of drinks, food vendors, prizes, swag and unlimited fowling (football meets bowling). Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Pink Ribbon Girls through the Fowling Warehouse’s FOWLanthropy initiative. Regardless of what you’ve heard, there are indeed laws while drinking White Claws, or any hard seltzer for that matter (tickets are discounted for designated drivers, hint hint). In support of his seventh studio album, MAHAL, arriving via Dead Oceans, Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear is performing with Khruangbin this Friday as part of their spring tour. Expect the new tunes to sound like a mixture of 1960s and 70s psychedelic rock to 1990s post-rock. AAPI Heritage Month Kickoff Party at Esoteric Brewery
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a “celebration of the diverse and rich history, contributions and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States,” according to local advocacy group AAPI Heritage Month Cincinnati’s website. To start the month off, plans have been made for a kickoff party at Esoteric Brewing, Cincinnati’s first Black and Asian-owned brewery. Revelers can enjoy bites from Decibel Korean Fried Chicken, music by DJ Druskii, a Tai Chi demonstration and a DIY zine-making station, along with a karaoke afterparty. 4-8 p.m., April 30, Free. It's springtime, the flowers are blooming and all sorts of gift-giving opportunities await the warmer weather, so what better place to prepare than a bazaar packed with local vendors? Fibonacci Brewing Company is hosting its second artist and craft show, where you can find all sorts of things that'll help fill those empty shelves you just dusted off in your spring cleaning mania. Becoming Dr. Ruth at Playhouse in the Park
Most of us only know Dr. Ruth as the charmingly frank sex therapist who made it her career to guide audiences through their own sexual hangups via classic late night talk shows. When Dr. Ruth is pictured in the mind’s eye we probably see a smiling, bespectacled geriatric (she’s now 93), but that’s just what we’ve seen on the air. Becoming Dr. Ruth is a stage play that tells the unaired side of Dr. Ruth, exploring her history via a one-woman show narrating the many milestones in the celebrated doctor’s life. From her family’s separation during the Holocaust to her time spent as an Israeli sniper through her international acclaim, the show guides audiences through her life’s ups and downs with poignant humor and solemn introspection. WARMTH x UnderWorld Black Arts Festival at Liberty Exhibition Hall
WARMTH, a "curated music exploration series" that provides a platform for local DJs and performing artists, is collaborating with UnderWorld Black Arts Festival, formerly UnderWorld Jazz Festival, to offer a two-part special event at Liberty Exhibition Hall's The Lounge. The event is segmented into two parts: first, a community dialogue centered around "the N word" and its use in Black-made music and pop culture. Called "N****s, N***s, Whoever You Are!" it will be facilitated by rap group Patterns of Chaos and Napoleon Maddox of UnderWorld Black Arts Festival and moderated by writer, artist and "ancestral herbalist enthusiast," Cheryl Durgans. The second portion of the evening, "Heat Rises," will be a platform for DJ Prymtime, DJ Rare Groove and Mr. Fantastic to spin some records and get the party moving. 6:30 p.m.-Midnight, May 1. Throughout the entire month of May, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden will be celebrating the latest additions to the Zoo's family.
