Thankfully, Cincinnatians won't have to wait long to venture to their favorite water park. On Saturday, May 28, Coney Island will officially open for its 2022 season.
The over-a-century-old park is home to the nation's largest recirculating pool (Sunlite Pool), water slides, Cannonball Cove, Typhoon Tower Splashpark and paddle boats, but 2021 welcomed some new thrills to the mix, like the Challenge Zone, a 150-foot floating obstacle course and some interactive fun in the park's new Action Alley.
The Challenge Zone is "the largest Aquaglide pool obstacle course in the United States," according to Coney Island's website, and will feature obstacles including the Freefall Extreme, a 10-foot ladder climbing wall attached to a slide; King of the Mountain, a nearly 7-foot climbing wall/slide; the Monkey Dome, an over 10-foot tall dome with multiple routes; the I-Beam, a 10-foot long balance beam; and several other challenging hurdles.
Action Alley boasts activities such as Connect 4 Basketball, Jump Pad, a Gaga Pit, foam parties and plenty of arts and crafts.
Visitors to the amusement park in June will also have a chance to make history. Between noon on June 17 and noon on June 18, Coney Island will attempt to set a world record for the most people down a water slide in 24 hours.
The Cincinnati water park will attempt to set this world record on The Twister — a 45-foot-high water slide that features four separate chutes that twist and turn over a quarter mile in length before dropping riders into the pool.
According to Coney Island's PR, there is currently no record set for this feat, but they say in an email to CityBeat that Guinness World Records "requires several thousand sliders to even be considered." For the first time in its 130-year history, Coney Island will remain open for 24 hours to make this world record attempt.
Tickets to Coney Island are currently on sale, and start at $21.50 per adult (ages 8-61) and $14.50 per child for all-day admission to the park. More info: coneyislandpark.com.
