Cincinnati’s third-annual National Day of Racial Healing will feature a virtual appearance from civil rights icon Angela Davis.
On Jan. 17, Davis will participate in a "virtual fireside chat" about racism and injustice in America moderated by Naimah Bilal, chief development officer of the Children's Literacy Initiative and co-host of Urban Consulate Cincinnati.
Davis, a professor and outspoken historical figure in the Black Power movement, is known for her advocacy for feminist scholarship and prison reform as well as her thoughts on white privilege. In 1970, Davis found herself on the FBI's most wanted list for her supposed involvement in the armed seizure of a California courthouse earlier that year, resulting in a total of sixteen months in prison. She was eventually released on bail in 1972 after a public outcry for her release and was eventually acquitted of all charges.

"She provides something most other scholars cannot – a firsthand account of the most powerful social movements in the latter half of the twentieth century."

In-person events kick off at 5 p.m. at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation at 720 E. Pete Rose Way and include performances and a speech from Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, co-founder of The Sadie Collective, a non-profit supporting Black women in economics.
