Pendleton’s Danger Wheel, aka a chance to get drunk and drive a Big Wheel down a hill, returns for the fourth year on July 28. Teams of three — including “one ballsy driver that is willing to risk life and limb” — will race competition-approved Big Wheels through two blocks of Pendleton, pitting driver against driver in a final downhill battle to the finish line. It costs $100 per team of three; two team members supply the running start.
The first race starts at 2 p.m. and go continuously until the 9 p.m. finals, when a winner will receive the title of "Danger Champion."
If you don’t want to risk your life, hang out, drink beer and watch others do so. Bring a folding chair and prepare to settle in for a full day of asphalt competition, with bonus beverages from local breweries and bars — including MadTree, Rhinegeist, Christian Moerlein, Weidemann’s, 50 West, Blank Slate and Rivertown — and food from trucks, streetpops and Nation Kitchen + Bar.
Proceeds from Danger Wheel will help beautify Pendleton with historic signage markers, flower planters and waste receptacles.
Register your three-person team ($100) by noon July 11. Or, bring your friends and some chairs to watch the spectacle of Danger Wheel, free of charge. The event starts at noon July 28. Find more info at dangerwheel.com.
