Inside Immersive Van Gogh Exhibition THE LUME at Indianapolis' Newfields

An immersive, multi-sensory exhibit named The LUME – focusing on the work of Vincent van Gogh – has emerged at Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, running through May 2022.

“As the largest exhibition experience in Newfields’ 137-year history, guests will be able to walk through nearly 30,000 square feet of immersive galleries and take in breathtaking masterpieces as you explore a new multi-sensory digital world,” reads the website. “Explore the combination of great art and cutting-edge technology at its finest with floor-to-ceiling projections of some of the most famous paintings in the world."

Developed by an Australian company called Grande Experiences, the show features around 150 projectors that will transform two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional masterpieces. These projectors will allow visitors to be immersed in some of van Gogh’s most popular creations such as "Sunflowers" and "Starry Night." (Think this scene from Netflix's Emily in Paris.)

According to Newfields, there is about 40 minutes of van Gogh content, featuring 30 of his paintings, and then 20 minutes of short stories and featurettes by digital artists who have interpreted the work of the master painter. The novel exhibit is expected to be very popular, as it will allow visitors to explore the most intricate details of van Gogh's work — without setting off a museum alarm.

There's no time limit on your visit to The LUME, and guests are encouraged to grab a snack from the cafe to picnic within the experience. There will also be a "Gogh Play" area for kids, as well as original paintings from the museum's collection on display from van Gogh, Cezanne and Gauguin.

The LUME is a separate ticketed experience and not included with museum admission. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for the public; kids ages 6-17 can get in for $17 general admission and $13 members; kids under 5 are free. The museum says tickets go on sale one month in advance, so if you are purchasing tickets on Aug. 3, they are going to be good for a visit between Sept. 28 and Oct. 31.
