Twenty years after its discovery, radium was considered a miracle cure for many diseases, Madame Curie was an international celebrity, and luminous watches, first used by soldiers, became fashion pieces—until the girls who painted them became ill with a mysterious disease. How could something seemingly helpful also be so dangerous? Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a watch dial painter, as she fights for her day in court.
