There’s a whale of a new watering hole in Mount Adams — or so the humpback design on the bar’s logo would suggest.
Hightail opened in late fall and is one of local hospitality group 4EG’s more recent ventures, which also include The Roosevelt Room in Liberty Township and Rosedale in the former Neons space in OTR. The bar boasts plenty of local beer and spirits, craft cocktails and human- and dog-friendly vibes — it’s a neighborly place where they not only know your name, they know your dog’s name, too.
“We just make sure everybody feels welcome,” says general manager Holli Gerding.
According to Gerding, the bar’s name is a combination of the words “highball” and “cocktail” — highball being the name of a traditional beverage made with whisky and typically ginger ale, and cocktail after the type of glass. The whale, which is a part of their logo and also greets you upon entering on a large black welcome mat, was inspired by the name and is an ode to the saying, “A whale of a time.”
Hightail’s cocktail menu plays heavily on bourbon. “We have a very wide selection of bourbons and we’re always trying to get in new ones or have the best ones in stock,” says Gerding.
Her favorite cocktail, the In Old Blue Grass Fashion, is made with Woodford bourbon, lemon juice, blueberry-basil simple syrup, bitters, blueberries and basil. “It’s a good start to a bourbon drink if you’re not a bourbon drinker,” she says. Most of their simple syrups and the sours that go into their craft cocktails are made in house.
Happy hour runs 4-7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and offers half-price beverages (except for wine and a few specialty spirits). Hightail also hosts theme nights throughout the week with trivia, a game night and an evening devoted to man’s best friend.
Wednesday’s Trivia Night is with Geeks Who Drink. “(It’s) a little bit different than the normal trivia — it’s more pop-friendly based and not as many questions as what we’re used to in trivia around Cincinnati,” Gerding says.
Thursday’s are “Decked Out” nights, where bargoers can choose from a variety of board games, card games and more. Along with games, patrons can expect drink specials and a DJ spinning Indie Rock.
Hightail is generally dog friendly but it is extra dog-friendly during Sunday’s Yappy Hour. From 7-9 p.m. you can enjoy their happy-hour specials and your pup will receive treats and some doggy swag.
Prior to the opening of Hightail, the space was occupied by Sprout Market & Eatery, a restaurant/grocery store with locally sourced goods. The new bar has since made it their own, updating the wallpaper, refinishing the floors and adding a new chandelier.
In addition to their day-to-day bourbon-slinging, dog-treating and neighbor-knowing, Hightail also hosts private parties and events. They are hoping to fix up their speakeasy-esque basement to use for more private parties by the summer or fall.
