These Adoptable My Furry Valentine 'Spotlight Animals' are in Need of a Little Extra Love

Greater Cincinnati's 10th-annual My Furry Valentine adoption event returns Feb. 6-14, and in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year it's shifting to a virtual platform. The event is utilizing Adopets, an online platform that allows adopters to view adoptable animals, schedule times to meet potential pets, process payments, and complete applications and contracts. My Furry Valentine, which usually takes place at the Sharonville Convention Center, finds homes for hundreds of animals annually, and this year, some shelters are expecting even greater numbers due to the recent pandemic adoption boom. Katie Mosure, the event manager for My Furry Valentine, says that people spending more time at home and in isolation from friends family likely explains why some shelters might be experiencing more adoptions. “With social distancing and limited face-to-face activities taking place, people are looking for new ways to form connections, and furry friends are a great source of companionship,” Mosure says.  “COVID-19, as well as other 2020 world events, have put a lot of stress on our communities,” she continues. “Pets are natural de-stressers and can help lift spirits, so people are tapping into this source of joy during this taxing time.” Organizations like The Humane Society, The Pedigree Foundation, and Best Friends Animal Society strongly recommend that those thinking about adding a pet to the family pursue adoption.  According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, one of the largest humane societies in the world, 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized every year in the U.S.  “It doesn’t have to be that way,” Mosure says. “An estimated 17 million people will add a new pet to their families this year. If more of them would choose to adopt a pet instead of buying one from a pet store, breeder or online, we could end shelter euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals.”  “Not to mention your life will be enriched, a pet can bring companionship and great joy to your life!” she continues. While a lot of people are adopting puppies and kittens to keep them company during these Indoor Times, not all centers have experienced this boom in adoption. One of the agencies participating in MFV says that it relies on adoption events to find homes for dogs that are older and have special medical needs, and a lot of these events have been canceled due to the pandemic. “It’s been very slow this past year,” Shell Young, director of Liberty Acres United Rescue Animal Sanctuary, tells CityBeat. “The last event we were able to attend was actually My Furry Valentine last year, and we got eight dogs adopted that weekend, which is big for us.” Young is hopeful that this year’s My Furry Valentine event will end with some of the sanctuary’s older dogs finding loving homes. “Older dogs are great for people who have some dog experience and they just want a companion,” Young says. “To an older dog, you’re the center of their universe and they’re more than happy to just nap and wait on you.” While some of the sweet senior dogs from Liberty Acres will be available for adoption, the event will also feature dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other small mammals from 14 other local rescue and adoption centers.  During the event, all dog adoption fees are $25 off, and cat adoption fees are as low as $10.   The virtual event will go live on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a look at available pets.  This slideshow highlights the event's spotlight animals that are in need of a little extra love — seniors, bonded pairs, pets with medical or temperamental issues,  or simply ordinary-looking pets that are overlooked. Oliver
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Oliver is a 2 year old Great Dane Mix looking for his next workout partner. He has an adventurous spirit who needs someone who will be dedicated to his physical and mental needs. He LOVES to play fetch and could play all day with a ball. Oliver can be picky with other canine friends so we recommend a meet and greet with any future fur siblings. He is a smart boy who loves to please his people and is very treat motivated. He already know sit, down, and shake so he can’t wait to learn even more. Oliver will pull on a leash, so he needs an owner who will teach him some leash manners with some positive reinforcement. Schedule an appointment to come meet and fall in love with Oliver!"

Achilles
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Hi everyone my name is Achilles! I am a 3 year old Pitbull looking for my furever home! I am a big boy with a big heart who is looking to share my love with the right family! I love to play in the doggie play yard with my favorite people and toys. I like to go walking, but be aware I like to pull. I LOVE treats to snack on while I get plenty of pets. I don’t prefer feline friends! I must meet any future canine siblings before going home to make sure we like to play together. Due to my energy levels I can’t go home with children 10 years old and younger so I don’t knock them over with all my kisses. Could I be your furry Valentine?"

"Hi everyone my name is Angel! I am a sweet 1 and a half year old pit bull mix looking for my own Valentine! I would love a home where I can go on long walks and hikes with you! At the end of the day I would love to snuggle up on the couch and watch some Netflix with my person. I am a very smart girl who also loves to learn new tricks and is treat motivated. I came to the shelter in not the best condition, but with lots of love from staff, volunteers, and yummy food I have gotten better! Can’t wait to be your forever Valentine!"

Arlo
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Arlo is a 1 year old Retriever Mix looking for an active home to call his own. He came to us as a stray and has really opened up with some confidence building activities from staff and volunteers. Arlo still has some insecurities we have been working through, especially the guillotine doors we use here when cleaning the dog’s kennels. He is a smart boy who loves to please and learn new tricks when you have a yummy treat in your hand. Arlo needs a very active home where he can get daily exercise and lots of mental stimulation like Kong toys, puzzle toys, and one on one training. Due to Arlo’s high energy and insecurities he is not able to go to a home with children under 15 years old. He does require a meet and greet with any future canine pals to make sure they can match Arlo’s playstyle. With lots of love, patience, and treats, Arlo can become an amazing canine companion! Could Arlo be your next workout partner?"

Bagel
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Bagel is a very playful cat he can be a bit much at times when he constantly wants
to play but he will be your best friend if you bribe him with wet food. He`s very sweet and affectionate towards people, but can be picky about his cat friends. He would do best in a home with another cat who was laid back or as the only pet. We feel this shouldn't stop him from finding his family, as he has so much love to give to his people."

"Bronski was adopted as a puppy, and was returned to us after a year in a home - and he came back with bad manners! Bronski is an absolute sweetheart, but he needs an experienced dog owner who knows how to physically and mentally challenge him. When Bronski doesn’t have enough work to do, Bronski’s naughty side comes out! If you’re a dog lover who loves the challenge of a smart dog who looks to you for training
and commands, Bronski will be your new best friend."

Buzz
Scott County Humane Society
"Buzz is our resident Cowardly Lion—can you be the one to give him the courage he needs? He has all the heart you could ever want and is the sweetest biscuit-making kitty you could ask for, but this handsome
fellow is afraid of everything—flying monkeys, wicked witches, small children, dogs, and even kittens.
Buzz would do well in a home where he can relax with quiet humans who will give him the chance to
find his courage. He is currently in a foster home with Isaac (also available for adoption) and they are
doing really well together. Estimated DOB: 12/27/2015"

Calliope
Animal Friends Humane Society
"This gorgeous little fighter is Calliope! She came to Animal Friends after being hit
by a car that fractured her spine. At first, she had trouble even moving her hind legs but the dedicated people here saw that she wasn’t ready to give up yet, and so we set her up in a loving foster home to give her time to heal! After two months of rest and TLC, Calliope can walk like a normal cat again! While her recovery is fantastic, she may never be 100% normal again. Because of where the spinal fracture is, she has lost some feeling to her bladder and bowels. We currently have her receiving acupuncture treatments to see whether we can help her regain feeling, but there is no guarantee that it will work. As a result of
this fracture, she is unable to pee on her own, but caring for her is still very simple! She just needs to have her bladder squeezed twice a day, and her foster has even trained her to do it over the toilet!
She has done great in her foster home, and spends most of her time hanging out around the house like a normal cat! Calliope is able to control holding her bladder, so there is no worry about her leaking pee around the house and she doesn’t even need a diaper. She is very sweet and loving, and she loves to snuggle with her humans or to sleep curled up beside them. She gets along very well with other cats, and doesn’t seem to mind dogs either, so she would make a great addition to almost any home! While she may be a little extra work, she makes up for it with lots of purrs and cuddles! It hasn’t been an easy road for Calliope, but now all she wants is a home to call her own and a family to love her!"

Chloe
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Chloe came to us as a very emaciated stray who was clearly not thriving outside. When she arrived she came in very sick and in need of medical treatment, so we sent her to a foster home for a short period of time to allow her to gain weight and recover from her upper respiratory infection. She recently had to have every last tooth removed due to dental disease so she will need a home willing to spoil her with a canned food diet for the rest of her life. Due to her illness, she was not able to interact with the foster`s resident cats but her foster reported she was extremely affectionate and sweet towards them. She prefers comfortable blankets to sleep on every night next to a warm fire and would be the perfect couch companion for an elderly person or couple. We`re not sure how she would do in a home with other animals, but may do best as the only pet in the home."

Chop
Cincinnati Animal CARE
"'Oh Chop you’re so fine oh Chop you blow my mind! Hey Chop!' This here is Chop, our favorite
bundle of love on three legs! Sure, he might be a paw short, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less of a
hunk of burnin’ love! He’s a great guy with a lot of energy to burn (three feet sure didn’t slow him
down!), so he’d be his best in a home with older kids and adults who can handle all that Chop. Come
on down and meet him today!"

Hank

"This sweet baby is Hank. Hank is a gentle boy who is about 3 years old and 45 pounds. He does well with everyone he meets and has so much love to give! Hank was a very good boy over Christmas while in a foster home for the Holiday. He loved snuggling on the couch with his foster family on top of the Holiday blankets. His favorite toy from Santa was a super chewer ball. He is the perfect mix of wanting to play for a bit to get some energy out then snuggling on the furniture with you for the rest of the night. If you’re interested in meeting Hank, please contact us at foster.adoption@cincinnatianimalcare.org !"

Francisco
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Francisco is an incredibly handsome boy looking for his forever home! He is extremely sweet and loving, but he has something called FeLV, which stands for Feline Leukemia Virus. It’s a noncurable disease that affects a small percentage of cats every year leaving them to be more susceptible to things like upper respiratory infections, anemia, dental disease and more. While cats with FeLV can lead long, healthy lives, there is a chance Francisco may not live as old as some other cats. FeLV is transmittable to other cats but can’t be given to dogs or humans, so he will need to either be your only cat or adopted to a home with other FeLV positive cats. Francisco deserves a loving home as much as any other cat, please give him a
chance to show you how amazing he is!Francisco is an incredibly sweet and loving old man, but he does need a specific home where he can thrive. Unfortunately, Francisco came to the shelter with severe mouth issues that have vastly improved but are still being treated. Therefore he will need an adopter that is able to continue his current treatment plan to resolve the infection in his mouth, which mostly includes steroids for an extended period of time. As a result of his advanced dental issues, Francisco does not have any teeth. Cats can still live perfectly happy and healthy lives without their teeth, but he will need to be on a canned food only diet for the rest of his life and will need to remain indoors with peaceful animals since he is unable to properly defend himself. He also has food allergies and needs to be fed a prescription limited-
antigen canned food. While in foster, we learned that Francisco is scared of dogs, so he would do best in
a home without dogs, although he may be okay in a home with very small and calm dogs that let him have his space. Since Francisco has FeLV, we have not been able to see how he does with other cats, but he came from a colony where he lived with many other cats so we assume that he would not mind another FeLV cat in the home, although he absolutely adores his humans so he would be perfectly happy alone as well.Francisco is a very sweet cuddle-bug who loves to spend time with his humans!
His foster family says that he will follow them around the house, hangs out on the couch for movies, and LOVES to snuggle in bed all night! He is also a very respectful cat who has never tried to scratch furniture and sits very nicely for nail clippings, brushing, washing, or belly rubs! When he’s cuddling with his people,
he loves to curl up in a lap and show off his nice loud purr while kneading the air with his front paws, so he would love an adopter who is home a lot and is looking for a kitty that loves to snuggle! While he knows that he is a little more work than the average cat, he lets you know each and every day how much he appreciates it by spending all his time purring and cuddling you!"

Dana
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Everyone say hello to Dana! This 5 year old pit bull mix came to us in May of 2020 severely emaciated,
lethargic, with diabetes, and a big will to live. We fueled that fire inside of her with lots of TLC, and today
Dana is doing wonderful. She is diabetic and will require special food and insulin for the rest of her life. The cost for these medications are not overly expensive, but you do have to have regular vet visits to ensure her levels are where they should be. Dana has some vision impairment due to the diabetes, but that doesn’t stop her living life. She can even chase a tennis ball and catch it! Dana is housebroken, and crate trained, and an overall joy to be around. She will require a home with no feline friends! Dana could do well with another dog in her home, as long as that dog was respectful of her vision impairment. She loves being doted on, groomed, and even taking bubble baths. Dana is very treat motivated and already knows sit and wait. She is not a fan of thunder, and fireworks, or other loud noises, so Dana will need some cuddle time during these events. She rides in the car well and is happy to tag along with you while you drive around town doing errands. Dana loves toys and will happily carry them around the house. This special needs girl is looking for the right home to call her own. Could she be the one for you?"

Laura
Scott County Humane Society
"Little Laura is a petite lady that barely looks big enough to be an adult even though she is about 2 years old. She can be fairly independent, but she loves attention and some evening lap time. Her foster mom suspects she would be even more affectionate if she was in a home without other cats. Laura is just fine with the dogs she has met in foster care, but isn’t really happy about other cats being around. Laura likes to sleep at the foot of your bed, although she will often come up and lay on your chest to get some affection. This well behaved lady never seems to cause any mischief - she doesn’t get into things, doesn’t knock things over, doesn’t scratch furniture. Bring this mannered kitty home today!"

Milly
League for Animal Welfare
"This beautiful senior gal was found as a stray, wandering the streets of Batavia, with a variety of neglected-dog medical issues. But when she’s cleaned up and feeling good, boy does our Milly shine! She prefers a quieter house, since she’s in her senior years, but Milly does well with other (quiet) dogs and absolutely adores any human that’s willing to give her a bite of their cheese! Milly can be a bit shy with new people at first, but you will win her love quickly (did we mention the cheese?) and teach a senior gal what a *true* forever home looks like."

Rachelle
League for Animal Welfare
"Beautiful girl with the bright gold eyes! Rachelle might get overlooked, because she’s a black cat. She might get overlooked because she can be a bit shy. And she might get overlooked, because you can’t tell that she’s a different cat than Somer … When Rachelle first came to the League, she was incredibly scared. So – we put her in with our “helper” cat, Somer, who taught her how to cat! Somer brings all the cats out of their shells, and it was no different with Rachelle – this girl shined under Somer’s tutelage! Now, the pair are kinda inseparable – you’ll find them snuggling, or grooming each other, or head booping each other. You’ll fall instantly in love with these BFFs!"

Rocko
Animal Friends Humane Society
"Hi my name is Rocko! I am a 6 year old Terrier/Pit bull mix! I am recently taken in by my foster mom and
her housemates and have been adjusting amazingly to their welcoming environment! I am a lazy boy who loves to cuddle up next to anyone willing to scratch my tushie! I am very quiet and low maintenance, as I come fully house broken with the ability to communicate my needs perfectly. I have yet to meet a stranger I didn’t like, as I am quick to make them my best friends! I would do great in a home with kids, as I am very patient (but please know I like my napes more than my toys!). I walk well on a leash and with the help of a treat I am happy to go in my crate whenever I am asked! I can’t go home with feline friends though. I would love to find a forever home where I can share my kisses and snuggles with you!"
