The popularity of cupcake bakeries has swept the nation, and Cincinnati is no exception. Nathan and Andrea Thompson, owners of local cupcakery Abby Girl Sweets (41 West Fifth St., Downtown; 513-335-0898), both admit that when you make “every batch from scratch,” you never know what might come out of the oven, which, in their case, has resulted in some curious and creative flavors.

CityBeat: What was the last great meal you ate and where did you have it?
Andrea Thompson
: At home, the flavors of Latin America are predominant in our kitchen since I am originally from Ecuador. I frequently make a dish similar to chicken stir-fry with sausage, mixed vegetables and seasoned with traditional spicy Spanish flair. I like to pair it with yummy, sweet plantains fried in oil.

CB: You’ve come up with some truly unique combinations, everything from Purple Berry Chip to Double Trouble. What flavor can we expect to see next coming from your cupcakery?
AT
: We’re always working on new flavors and are happy to report a new sweet will make an appearance in a few weeks when we deliver our second child, a son, due in September! Keep your fridge stocked with milk in preparation for a limited edition flavor to celebrate his arrival.
