Many times, the sign of a restaurant’s success can be found at the bar. You can find libations anywhere, but a great bartender can make you cancel your table reservation. Bill Rose is one bartender you will choose to share your dining experience with, and he has been sharing his expertise with the city for 18 years. Bill — now pouring at Lavomatic (1211 Vine St., Over-the-Rhine, 513-621-1999) knows more than what goes into a Rusty Nail — he also loves to eat.
CityBeat: What’s the last great meal you have had and where was it?
Bill Rose: Anything at (Hyde Park’s “world fusion” eatery) Cumin. The entrées are eclectic and elegant. (Pauses) To be honest, the beef chili I made last week was the very most recent great meal I have had. I cook ground chuck and onion until caramelized and add fresh tomatoes, cumin, pinto beans and a little semi-sweet chocolate. It is a little different each time I make it.
CB: You make great drinks at Lavomatic. What is your favorite holiday drink?
BR: For me, holidays mean bourbon and eggnog. A new favorite is bourbon and boiled custard. It can be found at many local groceries and is not terribly difficult to make. Try it and you will never look at eggnog the same again.
