Local ice cream and chocolate maker Aglamesis Bro’s has announced that it is expanding its operation for the first time in 50 years.
Aglamesis Bro’s will soon open a new 7,000-square-foot chocolate manufacturing facility near TQL Stadium in the West End, per a release. The location on Central Avenue was originally purchased in 2019 from the Costa Produce Company. Aglamesis Bro’s says it was set to begin operation in 2020 but paused due to COVID-19.
25 employees will be added to the production staff, which Aglamesis Bro’s says will “increase capacity more than tenfold,” allowing the company to fulfill orders and keep up with demand.
“We’ve spent the last 10 years avoiding advertising and promotion because we simply couldn’t keep up with demand. A huge part of our Christmas chocolate sales is to corporations who give our boxed chocolates out to staff and clients for gifts for the holidays. We lived for many years having to turn down orders because we couldn’t keep up with production for our existing shops and corporate customers,” Aglamesis Bro’s president and CEO Randy Young says in a release.
According to the statement, this expansion was done with “careful consideration,” as Aglamesis Bro’s says the company produces in small batches and refuses to sacrifice quality.
The opening of this new production facility is set for this fall, and Aglamesis Bro’s say it hopes to see no disruption in production during the transition.
“What I want to stress most is that we’re not changing the traditional ways we make our chocolates; we’re just simply doing more of it with more room to work in,” Young says.
In recent years, Aglamesis Bro’s has seen quite a few changes. Longtime owner James Aglamesis passed away in January of 2021 at the age of 93. “Jim” or “Mr. A,” led the family ice cream parlor chain for more than 60 years. The over-a-century-old ice cream brand was founded by Greek immigrants Thomas and Nicholas Aglamesis, Jim’s father and uncle, respectively. Jim took over the business in the 1950s and continued to oversee it until recent years, when he passed its leadership to third and fourth generation family members.
In August of 2021, Cincinnati City Council unanimously voted to give Allston Street in Oakley, where the original Aglamesis Bro’s storefront still operates, the honorary secondary name of James T. Aglamesis Way.
Aglamesis Bro’s is located at 3046 Madison Road, Oakley and 9899 Montgomery Road, Montgomery. Find more information at aglamesis.com.
