U.S. President Joe Biden's love for ice cream has been the subject of memes for years. It comes as no surprise, then, that his granddaughter also appreciates the cold dessert – especially when it's a Cincinnati brand at her wedding.
Vogue magazine profiled Naomi Biden on Nov. 22 with a feature story and photo shoot, laying out all the details of the First Granddaughter's nuptials to Peter Neal at the White House (they married Nov. 19, before the story was released but after part of the story was written and shot). In the feature, writer Chloe Malle asks Biden about her bridal gown, her feelings on tying the knot in the country's most famous address and her relationship with her grandfather. Photos show Biden sharing moments with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden – her "nana" – and canoodling with Neal on the White House balcony.
And then Biden described the dessert bar, featuring none other than Cincinnati's own Graeter's ice cream. The flavor? Chocolate chip.
Biden said the inclusion of Graeter's marked an ice cream evolution for her "pop."
"He used to be a Breyers guy all the way but we’ve gotten him to upgrade to Graeter's," Biden told
Vogue.
Graeter’s is famous for its French pot ice cream, especially the kinds that come with giant chocolate chunks. To make these, ice cream artisans pour gourmet chocolate over churning cream, forming a shell that is then broken apart. Perhaps the most iconic Graeter's flavor is the Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip, a bestseller that is made with black raspberries from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. (Graeter's is on
CityBeat's list of
local eateries where every Cincinnatian must take visitors.)
Biden is now part of a small group who have hosted weddings at the White House – just 19 weddings and four receptions have been held there,
Vogue reported.
