You could get the chance to go up against world-famous competitive eater Joey Chestnut in the annual Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest this year. A qualifying event will stop in Cincinnati later this month.
Nathan’s Famous will host the qualifying circuit at the Frisch’s Mainliner in Fairfax on Saturday, June 17. The top male and female finishers in the event will move on to the famous hot dog-eating contest in Brooklyn’s Coney Island on the Fourth of July. There, they’ll face off against competitors from around the world, including Chestnut.
In 2022, Chestnut earned his 15th title as hot dog-eating world champion. He holds the world record of 76 hot dogs and buns eaten in 10 minutes. Also returning to defend her title is Miki Sudo. Sudo is an eight-time female champion who ate 40 hot dogs and buns in 2022. Her all-time best was 48-and-a-half hot dogs and buns eaten in 10 minutes.
“Independence Day is uniquely American, but Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest is a global sporting phenomenon,” Phil McCann, Nathan’s Famous’ vice president of marketing, said in a press release. “Some of the most accomplished eaters in the world will compete at this event, but we also are seeking new talent in Cincinnati to represent our nation on the most patriotic day of the year.”
The Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest has been a holiday tradition since 1916. Around 35,000 people come out to Coney Island every year to watch the contest in person, and millions more tune in on ESPN’s live telecast.
