The J.M. Smucker Co. has recalled certain Jif peanut butter products.
You may want to check your peanut butter label twice before slathering it on your morning toast.
The J.M. Smucker Co. has issued a voluntary recall of select Jif peanut butter products after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration says it began investigating "a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections" related to Jif produced in Lexington, Kentucky.
The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say "five out of five people reported consuming peanut butter and four of the five people specifically reported consuming different varieties of Jif brand peanut butter prior to becoming ill." Tests were able to link the strain of salmonella to the Kentucky facility.
The CDC says so far 14 people across 12 states have gotten sick from the peanut butter and two have been hospitalized.
The affected Jif was sold across the U.S.
The CDC says the impacted peanut butter containers include "Lot code numbers 1274425 through 2140425, with '425' at the end of the first 7 numbers." The FDA and CDC say do not eat or serve this peanut butter and to throw it away. If you have used/eaten this product, both recommend sanitizing surfaces and utensils the food came in contact with.
The CDC says to call your doctor if you being showing symptoms of salmonella poisoning after eating Jif.
Symptoms include:
- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
- Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration
