After a brief hiatus, the Queen City's favorite Turkish coffee shop is back for a special pop-up at the Analog Bar inside Newport's Carabello Coffee. Rüya Coffee will deck out the Newport coffee shop in a similar fashion visitors may remember from owner Melissa Aydogan's former set up at Findlay Market's People's Liberty Globefront.
The pop-up event runs from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. May 18 and will feature Turkish coffee and chocolate.
Aydogan was a 2018 recipient of a People’s Liberty Globe Grant: a $15,000 grant given to groups or individuals with a goal of turning People’s Liberty’s Findlay Market Globefront gallery into a shared community space. During her stay in the space, she transformed it into a traditional Turkish coffeehouse. The interior was decorated in rich shades of reds and oranges accented by velvet pillows, layered rugs and billowy chiffon draped from the ceiling. Families, couples and friendly strangers could nestle into cushioned benches or gather around a big community table at the back of the shop.
According to Aydogan, the goal of Rüya is simple: It’s all about fostering community. To understand Turkey’s coffee is to understand some of the values of Turkish culture. Aydogan recalls one of many Turkish sayings about coffee: “One does not desire coffee or a coffeehouse. One desires conversation and coffee is just an excuse.”
