Cherry Thing-a-Lings

Batesville, Indiana's Schmidt Bakery has a tasty tradition nearly five decades in the making.

Once a year during President's Day weekend, the bakery offers their beloved Cherry Thing-a-Lings, a fried fritter-like donut made with cherries and topped with a sweet cherry glaze. The bakery invented them in 1975 and today people travel far and wide for the limited-time treat.

Schmidt only sells the fritters on select dates and times during President's Day weekend. Last year, they sold 164,160 fritters.

According to the website, Schmidt will be open 4 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 17-21 and will be making the pastries all weekend long. The bakery says to "plan to come and enjoy the wait" and they will try to "accommodate everyone these days as best as we can," noting they will cut the line as closing time approaches.

Fans of the famous pastry can also skip the line by ordering over the phone. The remaining shipping date for this year is Feb. 22. All orders must be called in to the bakery at 812-934-4501 by 5 p.m. Feb. 21 — or until they reach their maximum shipping amounts.

Cherry Thing-a-Lings are only available by the dozen — either a single dozen ($33 with shipping) or two dozen ($55 with shipping). Shipping takes two to three days.

Schmidt says the pastries are best enjoyed warm, so if you do get them shipped, they recommend zapping them in the microwave before eating.

Schmidt Bakery is located at 125 Batesville Shopping Village, Batesville, Indiana. For more info, visit schmidtbakery.com.
