The Bourbon Review magazine's annual list of America's Best Bourbon Bars was released on Aug. 28, recognizing eight Northern Kentucky bourbon bars as top picks in the nation.

The selection was made up of 109 bars, broken up by regions including Bourbon Country, the Midwest, South and West.

The Northern Kentucky area is home to dozens of bars with a heavy focus on bourbon — some longtime staples and some new kids on the block building a fast reputation for bourbon excellence.

"Bars on our list don’t just have expansive whiskey menus. Well OK, they definitely do, but there’s more to being one of America’s Best Bourbon Bars than that," the article explains.

"We look for creative cocktail and food menus that use bourbon in unexpectedly delicious ways. We look for private barrel selections, showing the personalized palates on each team. And most importantly, we look for staff members who are passionate about sharing their wealth of bourbon knowledge with their guests."

These local bourbon bars made the list:

  • Prohibition Bourbon Bar
  • Tousey House Tavern
  • Bourbon Haus
  • Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar
  • Goodfellas MainStrasse
  • Libby's Southern Comfort
  • Rich's Proper Food & Drink
  • The Globe Covington
