Cincinnati, your tastebuds are in for something really awesome or really questionable. And since we're dairy fanatics here at CityBeat, we're going with the former.
Earlier this summer, a flavor from Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen Ice Cream became the toast of the internet. Yes, bright yellow-orange macaroni & cheese ice cream was launched on July 14, just in time for National Mac & Cheese Day, and the world went gaga for it (or at least gaga for talking about it).
"We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of KraftMacaroni & Cheese we all grew up with,” Emily Violett, senior associate brand manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, said in a July press release.
The limited-edition flavor immediately became the inspiration for countless TikToks and YouTube videos.
The wacky flavor sold out online with greater mania than the (analog) Cabbage Patch Run of '83; after just one hour, all of the pints were cleaned out, a brand rep says in an email. Many ice cream connoisseurs regretted that they'd never experience the flavor explosion of processed dairy atop processed dairy.
But at some point afterward, management decided that it would take pity on the ice cream-less masses (or they realized how much money they were leaving on the table). The Kraft Macaroni & Cheese/Van Leeuwen frankencream is hitting shelves once again, so you you'll finally be able to taste what cheese powder — an American delicacy — would taste like if Olaf the Snowman farted it out.
Beginning Aug. 31, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream will be available for a limited time at vanleeuwenicecream.com for $12 per pint. And while the brand rep doesn't say anything in their email about purchasing this special flavor in stores, three Whole Foods locations in Greater Cincinnati do carry Van Leeuwen products:
- 2693 Edmonson Road, Hyde Park
- 5901 E. Galbraith Road, Kenwood
- 5805 Deerfield Blvd., Mason
Sure, it's a longshot, but we recommend checking local Whole Foods just in case this ice cream bliss happens to show up on the freezer shelves. We'll meet you there.
