Today (Sept. 27), Cincinnati singer/songwriter Elsa Kennedy released her latest single, the spellbinding "Redwoods." The goosebump-inducing piano ballad spotlights Kennedy's expressive, stop-you-in-your-tracks vocals and her viscerally emotive writing gifts, and offers a perfect example of why she is one of Greater Cincinnati's most compelling young singer/songwriters.
The emotional weight of the song comes from a place of personal and global turmoil, but there's a resonate undercurrent of optimism and love.
"I pushed this particular song (Redwoods) forward, as it's my partner’s (Amy) 30th birthday this month, & I wrote it about her," Kennedy writes in a statement about "Redwoods." "I wrote it in one night, a few days after being in the ICU — after surgery, before coming home. This was right as the fires in the Amazon were first heavily-televised, the destruction a strange parallel to the progression of my illness & the upheaval in Amy and I’s life.
"It's a song of pain & longing; the regenerative potential of sorrow, the people that we love, & how they shape our own worlds-within-our-world."
"Redwoods" is the first of four singles Kennedy is releasing at the end of each month through the end of 2019. On Dec. 27, the four tracks will be compiled as an EP titled Cadmium.
Kennedy performs tonight at the Mt. Echo Sunset Celebration at Mt. Echo Park in Price Hill. The event runs 7-10 p.m.
Kennedy will be releasing a music video for "Redwoods" on Oct. 11. There have been a couple of teaser clips shared on Kennedy's YouTube page.
On the night of Oct. 11, Kennedy will be performing during the big BLINK art and light celebration. Kennedy will play at 10 p.m. at downtown's Aster on Fourth cocktail bar that evening, performing a full band set with Ric Hordinski, Joshua Seurkamp and Taylor Eggers, followed by a solo set. Music starts at 10 p.m.
