As the saying goes, there is nothing new under the sun, and that holds true for Electro Pop music. The genre has been around since the 1970s, with bands like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk; you can even trace it back to the Theremin craze of the 1920s. Electro Pop really flourished in the 1980s, of course, when New Wave took hold.
The Detroit duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., which brings its counter-intuitive name and fun Quirk Groove jams to the 20th Century Theater this week, follows in those footsteps. The group insists on keeping its music light and breezy, infectious and upbeat. EDM this is not, as the band takes more cues from 1960s Beatles-esque Pop and New Wave than Skrillex.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.’s latest album, The Speed of Things, includes the single “If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t On The Dance Floor).” The musicians who make up the twosome, Joshua Epstein and Daniel Ott, have honed their chops at festivals and with opening dates in recent years, but the winter of 2014 finds them stepping up with a headlining tour of their own.
