For those even moderately aware of the state of Country music right now, you know authenticity is sadly lacking in this day of Nashville Pop. Mainstream Country has devolved into mediocre Southern Rock sung by folks who, as singer/songwriter Chris Knight puts it, “have got to tell everybody how Country they are … about a bunch of kids partying around a bonfire, every night, every song, every three minutes on the radio.”

So, other than the much older generation of Country music artists who are quickly leaving us, where do we turn for real-deal Country music with an edge? One place to look is the “Ameripolitan” sounds of the Austin Music Hall of Famer Dale Watson.

Watson has been playing music in bars since he was a teenager. Somewhere along the way, the singer, songwriter and guitarist found that he had a knack for bringing Honky Tonk music with attitude to life. But he is fully aware of the current times he lives in. With Watson’s latest album Carryin’ On, his approach was to not be just a retro artist.

“I was really hoping to make a record with today’s technology,” Watson says, “but with the musicians who played on the music I grew up on.”

DALE WATSON plays with Whiskey Daredevils and Straw Boss Thursday, Aug. 29 in the Sanctuary at Southgate House Revival in Newport, Ky. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here .
