Unless you’ve seen Delta Spirit before, there is no way you are fully prepared for one of its concerts. Not so much a raging, thrashing party as just a gentle, bouncing ocean of people, the crowd’s vibe at a Delta Spirit concert is transcendent, almost spiritual.
Blending mellow with “danceable,” Delta Spirit’s music oozes California charm. With surf-y guitar, driving rhythms (sometimes made by two drummers!) and easy-enough lyrics, Delta Spirit is just a good old-fashioned Rock band, as shown on its latest album, Delta Spirit. The group has a vintage sound and a retro look, too, from the lead singer’s pompadour-esque hair right down to the members’ cuffed jeans.
Delta Spirit’s first album to grab Billboard attention was 2010’s History from Below. The album featured “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” which appeared on the finale of Friday Night Lights. The group is just now catching on with the mainstream, but music junkies have known about Delta Spirit since 2008’s lo-fi gem, Ode to Sunshine.
With three albums and two EPs under its belt, Delta Spirit has plenty of music to offer concertgoers, none of it anything less than thoroughly enjoyable. But, please, for the sake of everyone around you — wear deodorant. Chances are, your arms will be flailing along.
DELTA SPIRIT performs Friday, Nov. 16 at Bogart's in Corryville with JEFF the Brotherhood and FIDLAR. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here.
