Divine Fits sounds pretty much as you’d expect of a band that features Spoon’s Britt Daniel and the Handsome Furs’ Dan Boeckner. The band’s debut, the aptly titled A Thing Called Divine Fits, finds the quartet — which also features drummer Sam Brown and keyboardist Alex Fischel — employing its lead duo’s addictive stock in trade: sharp, groove-oriented tunes marked by spiky guitars, shimmering keyboards and an urgent vocal thrust that is sure to have Peter Wolf shaking his legs in admiration.
“I had been in Spoon for going on 17 years and I wanted to try my hand at something else, a new experience,” Daniel says in a recent phone interview from Austin, Texas, where Divine Fits was set to play eight SXSW shows in three days. “I really liked Dan, and I loved that whenever I saw him onstage with the Furs he just seemed like he was having the time of his life. I was really interested in being in a band with that guy.”
A Thing Called Divine Fits is front-loaded with the stellar “My Love Is Real,” “What Gets You Alone” and “Would That Not Be Nice,” all of which are as strong as anything either guy has done in his past output.
“I wanted to be in a situation where it was two songwriters who could hopefully bring out the best in each other,” Daniel says. “When you have someone to collaborate with then you can come up with something better than you could on your own. I love being in this band and not singing all the songs. Sometimes I get to back him up; sometimes he’s backing me up. It’s kind of a cool change.”
