Singer Jessica Hernandez is beautiful, edgy, precocious, talented and living the American Dream. A first generation artist whose parents are of Cuban origin, she grew up in the now much-derided city of Detroit. But in the video for the song “Dead Brains,” where Hernandez and her band, The Deltas, drive around The Motor City in a vintage Lincoln Continental with acoustic instruments, their love for their hometown is hard not to notice.

Don’t let the acoustic instruments fool you; this outfit is a plugged-in band, for sure. In an age when even Alt Rock and edgy Pop music often have a sameness to them, Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas have stepped up with a determination to be distinctive. At times kicking in clangy Rock, other times bringing forth soulful grooves and big beats, the band is not afraid to take a strange sound or unusual melody and run with it.

Despite Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas’ refreshing energy and attitude, they are still a regional act that needs to be heard on a wider scale.

JESSICA HERNANDEZ & THE DELTAS play with Hollis Brown Thursday, Aug. 29 at MOTR Pub in Over-the-Rhine. Check out performance times and get venue details here.
