LISTEN: “Beams” by Strawberry Tapes, the New Project from Andy Gabbard of SW Ohio Rockers Buffalo Killers

The breezy Pop Rock track is from ‘Strawberry Tapes Vol. 1,’ a new tape being issued for Cassette Store Day on the band’s Howler Hills Farm label

CityBeat is proud to present the premiere of “Beams,” a new song from Strawberry Tapes, the latest project from Andy Gabbard, a prolific solo singer/songwriter and also a cornerstone member of SW Ohio Rock & Roll greats Buffalo Killers.

“Beams” is featured on the forthcoming cassette Strawberry Tapes Vol. 1, which is being released on Oct. 13 for Cassette Store Day (read about other 2018 CSD releases here). The 11-track release is the third offering from the Buffalo Killers’ Howler Hills Farm label, named for the band’s compound located on rural lands near Middletown (right between Cincinnati and Dayton), which includes a recording studio where the BKs, M. Ross Perkins, Cricketbows and others have done sessions.

“Beams” finds Gabbard taking the powerful melodics of his sublimely potent Power Pop solo work and filtering through a breezier Psych-leaning Pop perspective — with slinky flute (or Mellotron flute) sounds  — giving it a ’70s AM Gold vibe.

“’Beams’ is a song about my conscience,” Gabbard says of the song. “The lyrics are a conversation with myself in attempt to make myself feel better. It’s just what I was feeling in the moment. I was also watching the summer Olympics when I first started writing it and I thought the imagery of a gymnast on a balance beam was pretty and fitting for the feel of the reoccurring flute interludes in the song.”
