Martin Sexton

March 9 • 20th Century Theater

When you come from a family of 14, it no doubt takes effort if you want any attention. For Martin Sexton, that attention came almost immediately after picking up a guitar.Sexton’s music has been described as Folk, Soul and Rock. He plays all of those and much more. Traveling and performing mostly with just his acoustic guitar, the Folk descriptor is an easy place to land. His finger-style playing and experiments with distortion land him in the Soul and Rock genres. But it’s his mellow, distinctive voice and soul-baring lyrics makes him worthy of attention.Sexton began his first of many bands while in eighth grade in Syracuse, NY. A few short years later, at the age of 18, Sexton left home and found himself in Boston. In a city known for its live music and bar scene, Sexton almost immediately found himself in the thick of it all. His first album, In The Journey, was recorded on an 8-track recorder in his friend’s attic. Sexton sold an astonishing 20,000 copies just while busking around Harvard Square. These days you have to buy a ticket instead of a bus pass if you want to hear Sexton perform his tenth album, Fall Like Rain. From Harvard Square to Carnegie Hall, Martin Sexton has found himself at the top of his game.
