Motionless in White

I’m sick of Hot Topic bands, those shitty Metalcore bands that the dude behind the counter wearing his YMCMB tank-top, five lip piercings and gauges the size of a gloryhole politely gushes over for the 10 minutes you’re at the register trying to purchase a Reign in Blood T-shirt that was on the clearance rack for $3.99.

These are the Metalcore bands that have taken a cookie-cutter approach. The cookie tasted great when artists like Killswitch Engage, Enter Shikari, Atreyu and Waking The Fallen-era Avenged Sevenfold were perfecting the recipe back in the early to mid-2000s. But you know what happens when you eat too many cookies? You get fat and eventually develop diabetes and could potentially turn into Wilford Brimley.

Fortunately there are bands like Motionless in White that are the shot of insulin Metalcore needs to bring the genre out of this self-induced sugar coma. While the band’s songs often use the formulaic Metalcore checklist — chugging riff, Pop chorus, Hardcore breakdown, movie quotes, chugging riff reprisal, rinse and repeat — there is something inherently different about Motionless’ sound.

Motionless in White takes the best parts of what made Metalcore popular in the early 2000s, but adds gothic hints and industrial elements. On the band’s 2010 major label debut, Creatures, Joshua Balz’s keyboard playing creates haunting, ominous atmospherics that perfectly complement the horror-themed lyrics Chris Cerulli howls on tracks like “Creatures,” “Com Pt. II” and “Count Choculitis.”

On songs like “Abigal” and “Puppets (The First Snow),” guitarists Ricky Olson and Devin Sola show that they aren’t your run-of-the-mill Metalcore axe-men, exhibiting their talent in riffs that don’t take over the whole song but add a depth to the music that sets Motionless apart from its peers.

Even though there is probably no saving Metalcore from the depths of cookie-coma despair, go and support Metalcore’s last hope for a creative take on a dying sound.

MOTIONLESS IN WHITE performs Tuesday, Nov.19 at Bogart's in Corryville with guest Chelsea Grin. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here.
