Founded in the ’90s in Athens, Ga., and guided by the mad-genius Avant Pop songwriting instincts of Kevin Barnes, of Montreal is one of the more compelling Indie acts going. From its early Beatles-esque offerings and its slanted, kaleidoscopic Disco Pop to the band’s most recent effort, the more “live band” Rock of Lousy with Sylvianbriar, of Montreal has amassed an adventurous discography that is well worth getting lost in if you haven’t previously been exposed to Barnes’ brilliance.
The group is also one of the best live acts on the circuit, always “putting on a show” as opposed to simply “playing a gig.” Reviews from of Montreal’s current tour suggest that while Sylvianbriar might be one of the band’s more straightforward albums of the past decade, its live performances remain frisky, freaky displays of engaging theatrical psychedelia.
The band's latest area show will also feature Cincinnati-based Dream Tiger (led by Why? keyboardist Liz Wolf) and Dayton party rockers The Nightbeast.
OF MONTREAL plays the Ballroom at the Taft Theatre on Saturday, May 17. Tickets/more info here.
