The musically obsessed often make fun of music-based television talent shows. Rightfully so, too. Any scheme that lands Taylor Hicks and Kelly Clarkson in our faces deserves all the scoffing possible.
However, sometimes there’s a diamond in the screaming, nasally roughness. Olly Murs is one such diamond. He’s like the Carrie Underwood of The X Factor … not because he’s Country, but because he doesn’t, you know, suck.
If his name sounds familiar, it’s because his song “Heart Skips a Beat” (released in 2011) has just recently taken over various Top 40 stations in Cincinnati. He was also here months ago with another band (who shall remain nameless so as not to besmirch Murs’ reputation). Murs first came to listeners’ attention, though, when he only finished as runner-up during the sixth series of the UK’s The X Factor. But, what do the viewers and voters of those shows know, anyway? (Repeat: Taylor Hicks)
Murs makes pure Pop gold. His third No. 1 single, “Dance with Me Tonight,” is as perky and dance-ready as music can be. (Expect to hear it on Cincinnati radio sometime in 2014.) He’s like a more colorful Michael Bublé, if Bublé had a penchant for fedoras and R&B.
If you’re a dude with a girlfriend who likes Bruno Mars, take her to this show.
OLLY MURS performs Saturday, May 4 at Bogart's in Corryville. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here.
