Northern Row Brewery & Distillery is offering a spot for musicians to share their sounds every Tuesday night from 6-9 p.m.

The venue, located in Over-the-Rhine, hopes to re-cultivate the pandemic-affected arts community by encouraging up-and-coming artists to perform a cover, an original song, or a short-set on a regular basis.

“COVID has been hard on musicians, with many places going dark to live performances. Opening short sets on Friday evenings is a way that they can also get in front of a live audience and build their performance sets,” David Berger, Northern Row co-owner, says in a release.

The pandemic has been particularly devastating to all associated with the live music industry; musicians, venue workers, managers, and promoters alike.

According to a survey facilitated by the National Independent Venue Association, an organization formed during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to advocate for the preservation of live venues, 90% of independent venues reported they will close permanently in a few months without additional federal funding.

“I’ve been looking for a place like this for a while, where every week there are reliably good musicians here that come and share their music,” Quinten McKenzie, a local musician, says in the same release. “Hopefully, it turns into something greater than just a few of us meeting up every week to play music. We’re hoping it gains some traction and becomes a place in Cincinnati that is known to be a music hotspot.”

In addition to open mics on Tuesday nights, Northern Row also has live music performances on Fridays and Sundays.

Artists that participate in open mic nights are welcome to schedule to play during a Friday time slot (3:30-5 p.m. or 5-6:30 p.m.) or sign-up to play for the Sunday time slot (1-5 p.m.)

Northern Row provides microphones for performers, but artists should bring their own quarter-inch cable if playing guitar as well as an LXR or mic cable.

Northern Row Brewery & Distillery is located at 111 West McMicken Ave. in Over-the-Rhine.
