Unless you are a recently unfrozen caveperson, you are likely hyper-aware that the night before Thanksgiving is the busiest night of the year for bars, as former residents return to their hometowns for the holiday to meet up with old friends, socialize with new ones and drink merrily. Escaping from the family — or letting off some steam before the big dinner — also likely plays a big part in the popularity of drinking establishments on Thanksgiving Eve, which this year falls on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Thanksgiving-time is also great for fans of live music — not so much touring acts, but homegrown ones who tour a lot or otherwise don't perform locally too often. Area music venues also like to up the ante on Thanksgiving Eve and pay a little extra to bring in popular locals who will draw more people than the competition. This Wednesday, you can catch top Greater Cincinnati acts like The Tillers, Lift the Medium, Noah Smith, Prizoner, Ernie Johnson From Detroit, 90 Proof Twang and many others at individual shows around town.

But if you are a "get the most bang for your buck" type of live music consumer — and especially if you love Americana and its various rootsy forms — you're going to want to check out the "Get Stuffed on Music" concert at Newport, Ky.'s Southgate House Revival.

Now in its fourth year, "Get Stuffed" once again features nearly 20 top-shelf acts, mostly from Greater Cincinnati. Music runs on the Southgate's three stages continuously, beginning at 7:45 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are just $10 in advance here or $15 at the door.

The event was previously called "Get Stuffed on Local Music," and while it still features a wealth of excellent local artists, this year's concert also has some out-of-towners — and they are notable enough to necessitate a title tweak. Joining the hometown acts this year are Louisville, Ky. honky-tonker Josh Card, Huntington, W.V. rockers Of The Dell and Lexington, Ky.'s acclaimed and hard-touring Justin Wells, who plays Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati so often (solo and with his Roots/Country/Southern Rock outfit Fifth on the Floor), we might just claim him as our own if Lexington ever stops treating him right.

Traveling furthest for the "Get Stuffed" shindig is Australian Ruby Boots. OK, so the eclectic, critically-acclaimed AltCountry/Indie Americana singer/songwriter isn't actually traveling all the way from Australia for the gig. After making a name for herself Down Under, Boots moved to Nashville in 2016, signing a record/distribution deal with esteemed U.S. Roots label Bloodshot. Her debut for the label, Don’t Talk About It, was released to widespread praise at the start of this year. Reviewers have compared her to the likes of Nikki Lane and Lucinda Williams, but her broader brush has also allowed the names of artists like Tom Petty, Courtney Barnett, T Rex, Queens of the Stone Age and Best Coast to become reference points for those attempting to describe the Ruby Boots sound.

Speaking of rampant eclecticism within a hard-to-pinpoint genre — the local Get Stuffed lineup is heavy on artists from Greater Cincy's dynamic Roots/Americana scene, including Ben Knight & The Welldiggers, Wilder, Veronica Grim, The

Midwestern, Joe's Truck Stop and Slippery Creek, but it also features the Carribean/WorldBeat sounds of Queen City Silver Stars, rootsy Pop-oriented rockers The Newbees, Mad Anthony's Adam Flaig, vintage-styled Garage R&B/Soul dynamos Los Honchos and many other acts you might not immediately associate with the loosely-defined "Americana" tag.
