Rosie Flores has been gigging since the 1960s. She started with Rock & Roll, was a part of the Big Guitar Honky Tonk scene in L.A. that produced Dwight Yoakam and others and, in the 1980s, Flores threw down some Punk with The Screamin’ Sirens.

A decade later, Flores recorded the album Rockabilly Filly, which brought new attention to veteran Girl Power rockers and duet partners Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin. Eventually, Flores moved to Austin, Texas, where her Tex Mex grooves were received with open arms.

Despite appearances on TV shows like Austin City Limits and Conan O’Brien’s show — and after being honored with an Austin Music Hall of Fame nod — Flores is still unknown to a lot of people. While the Bonnie Raitts of the world are (rightfully) living large, Flores told Guitar Player magazine earlier this year that in 2010 she had to sell a couple of her sweet instruments just to pay medical bills when she broke her arm.

Hopefully that will change with her latest album, Working Girl’s Guitar, where Flores provides all of the guitar work to fully highlight her axe-wielding skills. On Saturday night, Flores will bring her soulful voice and classic fretwork to Newport for a special acoustic show.

ROSIE FLORES plays Saturday, July 13 at Southgate House Revival in Newport. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here.
