Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings ¯ Local singer/songwriter Josh Hisle, who performs under the name Lost in Holland, has been invited to play at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival in Utah. Manager Jon Brennan says Hisle will perform the fest´s Music Café series Jan. 24. Hisle goes on after Gavin DeGraw and Crowded House´s Tim Finn, but most exciting are the ¨special guests¨ (as it´s listed on Sundance´s Web site) slated to appear with him. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young will be at Sundance promoting the documentary CSNY, Déj Vu, which examines the group´s political side, as well as its relationship with the audience. If you haven´t guessed, the four musicians are those special guests slated to join Hisle on stage. Hisle, an Iraq war vet who appears in the film and has music on the soundtrack (check his MySpace page for a cool photo of Neil Young jamming with Hisle), writes visceral anti-war songs, something that surely will endear him to his fellow, more legendary jam-mates. You can wish Hisle well this Saturday, as Lost in Holland performs at the Blue Note for a show cheekily titled ¨Beer Not Bombs¨ (25-cent drafts!). (myspace.com/lostinholland)
¯ Richard Buerger of the long-running Jam band Deepwater Junction is headlining a benefit concert for the Polly Klaas Foundation this Saturday at the Madison Theater in Covington. Buerger will be joined by some of his Deepwater bandmates (the group is currently reconfiguring after an extended hiatus) for the show. Also on the bill, some crispy Bluegrass/Newgrass from the Rumpke Mountain Boys and the magnificently named Kentucky Fried Pickin´, plus several other special guests.
The Polly Klaas Foundation helps find missing children and also helps parents learn how to keep their kids from going missing. Go to pollyklaas.org for more.
¯ A new music-centric foundation named in honor of late, great local Blues legend Big Joe Duskin has been formed with the intent of bringing some hands-on musical education into Greater Cincinnati area schools. The nonprofit ¨Big Joe Duskin Music Education Foundation¨ will hire local musicians to go to area schools for a half-day presentation, encouraging students to learn to play instruments. The Foundation´s goal is to do at least one presentation in every school in Greater Cincinnati every year. The first of surely many fund-raisers is the ¨Big Joe Duskin Memorial Birthday Party,¨ taking place Feb. 10 at Music Hall. Artists like The Bluebirds and The Medicine Men have signed on to perform, and Ricky Nye will reportedly do his own musical tribute to Big Joe for the event (more acts will be announced). Tickets and VIP seats go on sale Jan. 12. For more information about VIP tickets, send an e-mail to [email protected].
¯ The Rock band Semi-Automatic is doing a one-off reunion show (just like Zeppelin!) at the Mad Hatter Saturday, joined by guests The Host, Heroes and Madmen and Eric Tepe. The show is being billed as their ¨final¨ reunion, as bassist Matt Parmenter prepares to relocate from Cincinnati to Austin, Tex. (myspace.com/rockomatic)
