This Sunday, late local Blues hero Big Joe Duskin will be honored at the "first annual" Big Joe Duskin Memorial Birthday Party at Topper Ballroom inside Music Hall. Proceeds from the show go to the Big Joe Duskin Music Education Foundation, a program that will send musicians into area schools to encourage them to pick up a musical instrument. Sunday's party/concert features some of the best of the local Blues scene — not surprising given Duskin's huge influence on it. Music starts at 4:45 p.m. with Cash Ownly and The Roadies. At 5:30 p.m., fantastic guitarists Scotty Anderson, Scott Covrett, Larry Goshorn, Tim Goshorn, Harold Kennedy and Marcos Sastre will participate in a "Guitar Pull" jam session. The Jon Justice Band, which competed in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis last weekend (the band and fellow Cincy representative Ricky Nye surprisingly did not make it to the finals), performs at 6:45 p.m. A big tribute to Duskin takes place at 7:45 p.m. featuring The Blue Birds Big Band, Ricky Nye, The Medicine Men and many special guests, including II Juicy, Kelly Richey, Sweet Alice Hoskins, Cheryl Renee, Bekah Williams, Keith Little and Sonny Moorman. Tickets are still available at cincinnatiarts.org or by calling 513-621-ARTS. (bigjoeduskin.org)
