The last time Sarah Jarosz showed up in Cincinnati was during the MidPoint Music Festival last year. And I’d wager that the vast majority of people who should have seen her probably missed out.
A Grammy-nominated performer, Jarosz has been making old music pretty much since she was a kid. Her debut album, Song Up in Her Head, was recorded while she was still in high school. And she’s still pretty young; Build Me Up From Bones, her newest record, was released last year, shortly after she graduated from college. Nominated for a Best Folk Album Grammy, Bones is her most mature album yet, filled to the brim with gorgeous Folk and Bluegrass tunes.
It’s hard to believe Jarosz’s name is not more recognized. After three albums and countless big nominations, Jarosz has played everywhere from The Ryman to Austin City Limits. Jarosz also took part in Jerry Douglas’ Transatlantic Sessions for the BBC. Filmed in Scotland, the sessions are a series of recorded performances from the likes of Jarosz, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Aoife O’Donovan, Alison Krauss and many others. (It airs stateside on some PBS stations; I’m on a CET/KET strike until they bring Transatlantic Sessions to me.)
Any moment now, Jarosz — who will tour with the Milk Carton Kids this fall — is sure to end up a much bigger deal and, in turn, command a much more expensive concert ticket. Do not miss her this time around.
SARAH JAROSZ plays 20th Century Theater 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26. Tickets/more info here .
