Self Diploma's Beats Summer Music Series featuring Krewella

Aug. 11 • Fountain Square

With the staggering amount of recent media attention devoted to Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia and others, the revitalization of the Electronic Dance scene is complete. This time around, the line between DJ and artist is fuzzier, as many of the genre’s practitioners transcend mere turntabling and sampling to become creative and unique musical entities in their own right.

Chicago’s Krewella represents another faction within the Electronic Dance community with its cross-pollination of Dubstep, House, Electronica and pure Pop.

Krewella began five years ago when Kris Trindl, better known as the Rain Man, began making music with high school pal Jahan Yousaf, who then coaxed her sister Yasmine away from her Indie Rock band. The trio worked Chicago and the surrounding region for three years before deciding to ditch their day jobs and drop out of school to concentrate solely on their musical pursuits (they commemorated the date they made the leap with “6.8.10” neck tattoos).

Krewella’s hard work is finally paying some serious dividends; its self-released EP Play Hard (featuring the anthemic club hit “Killin’ It” and the Dubstep/Pop swagger of “Alive”) was debuted exclusively in June with a stream through Rolling Stone, the group scored opening slots for the likes of the Crystal Method and Porter Robinson, and the trio has an impressive slate of festival gigs scheduled. Krewella has gotten even broader exposure in the wake of high profile collaborations with Skrillex (“Breathe”) and Adventure Club (“Rise & Fall”), plus a hot remix of Knife Party’s “Fire Hive.” Those opportunities are bound to increase exponentially as Krewella continues to transition from blog buzz band to EDM megastars.

KREWELLA performs Saturday, Aug. 11 at Fountain Square as part of Self Diploma's Beats Summer Music Series with guests CJ the DJ, The Chaotic Good, SH3LLZ and Neon Medusa. Check out performance times and get venue details here.
