Just like when she was alive and performing, the love for late local singer/songwriter Katie Reider has been strongly evident since her death from a rare tumor last summer. The Web site 500kin365.org — which allows music lovers the chance to download a compilation of Katie’s music for a $1 donation — has helped keep Katie’s spirit and music alive, with 80,000 people participating.
Now, some local fans and friends are hoping to have the Folk/Rock stage at the Taste of Cincinnati food and music fest this May named after Reider. Via a Facebook page and the petition site showyourlove.info, in less than a month 1600 people from across the country have endorsed the Katie Reider Stage at Taste. Reider — who was profiled in the New York Times after her death — played the Taste of Cincinnati several times in her lifetime, debuting in 1998 and performing for the last time in 2007. A fitting tribute, to be sure.
The Host Heads West
Don’t be surprised if Cincy Alternative Hard Rock band The Host is the next local group to start getting some much-deserved national attention. The band recently announced that it had been invited to travel to Los Angeles to record an “industry demo” to be shopped to labels and other industry folk. The group had received interest from several producers but ultimately chose legendary Hard Rock knob-twiddler Dave Jerden, who helped launch bands like Jane’s Addiction and Alice in Chains and has also worked with groups like The Offspring and Social Distortion.
The Host — which had its profile raised last summer with several dates on the Vans Warped Tour — is hosting a “going away party” in honor of their trip out west this Friday at Play By Play in Silverton. Locals The Strongest Proof and Black Saints Cartel will also perform. (thehostband.com)

• Speaking of The Host, the band has a great music video for its song “Duel” in the Discover Ohio Film “Music Video Challenge,” which features clips from bands from throughout Ohio. • The Northside Tavern — one of the city’s best clubs for original local music — is celebrating its seventh birthday this weekend. Saturday night, Lovely Crash, The Guild of Calamitous Intent and DJ K Pool will help the club blow out the candles with a 10 p.m. show. As always at the Tavern, the show is free.
• Another anniversary of note next week is the 10th one for “Music Café,” a diverse series that takes place the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Fitton Center for Creative arts in Hamilton. For the 10th anniversary showcase, local artists Jake Speed, Mark Cormican, Eric Loy, Raison D’etre and Rooster Forbes will perform starting at 7 p.m. All shows in the Music Café series are free.
