A recent post on Snowmine’s Facebook page thanked its growing base of admirers before conveying that the band would “promise to give you more soundtracks for your memories yet to be made.”
It’s a promise they’re likely to keep — the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based five-piece creates layered soundscapes that would be right at home as the accompaniment to a dreamy coming-of-age drama set in Williamsburg.
Frontdude Grayson Sanders is a classically trained musician and composer with a soft spot for “Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok, Ligeti and Autechre,” influences that clearly color the band’s 2011 full-length debut, Laminate Pet Animal, a head trip that envelops one’s senses via Afro beats, chiming guitars, mood-altering strings and Sanders’ versatile, high-pitched croon. The band’s bio claims that “by the time he was 22, he had written five full symphonic premiers, including a recent modern orchestral cover of Bjork’s “Cover Me,” so it’s safe to assume Sanders and Co. have grand creative ambitions.
Snowmine is set to release its second full-length this spring, but until then they’ve dropped a few teasers, including the recent single “Saucer Eyes,” with its angular guitars and twinkling keyboards bringing to mind Interpol without the desolation. It’s an addictive, evocative ode to a late-night rendezvous in which Sanders confesses: “
After midnight/Saucer eyes/When they're open wide/They'll disguise our drunken grins/So don't mind the clothes we're in/I guess we're gonna see/See the sun rise again.”
