30 years ago, the future of Alternative Country was in question as Uncle Tupeloone of the pioneers of the genre, disbanded.

Upon release of the band's debut album, it looked as if Uncle Tupelo would be at the top of the Alternative Country charts for years to come — that is until singer and songwriter Jay Farrar left the group after disagreements with his bandmates.

Thankfully, Farrar decided to remain in the industry, forming Son Volt in 1994 alongside former Uncle Tupelo drummer Mike Heidorn as well as Jim and Dave Boquist, who Farrar met during the final Uncle Tupelo tour.

CityBeat has previously covered the discography of the Alternative band, which has continued to release music to critical acclaim since the group's formation.

Fast forward 27 years and Son Volt is still leading the “No Depression” Americana movement, releasing its tenth studio album Electro Melodier on July 30.

On the album, listeners will hear Farrar share his thoughts on the recent division and political conflict that has been taking place in the United States. Farrar specifically denounces the hypocrisy and lies that he believes has caused anger throughout the country.

To celebrate the release of the group’s newest album, Son Volt has announced a 16-date tour, including a stop at Clifton’s Ludlow Garage at 8 p.m. Sept. 18. Tickets are available now at ticketmaster.com.

Below, check out the song "Reverie," the first song off of Son Volt’s Electro Melodier.
