The dark ’80s synth sound has been reborn and we have, at least partially, WAZU to thank. WAZU is a duo based in New York City (but originally from Australia) made up of Matt and Rizz. While they have been a band for two years, they will release their debut album on Halloween (they are that dark). The album is co-produced by WAZU, Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Swans, Real Estate) and Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Hangmen). The duo’s gothic electronic sound is comparable to The XX, but WAZU seems to make songs that are both depressing and danceable.
You can easily hear the ’80s Goth influence in this band on their most recent EP. Elsewhere, “Murder 1” has a definite Tears for Fears vibe and has been described as “post apocalyptic.” Although you could say this band draws from past sounds, which isn’t exactly original, the ease with which they reach darkness is outstanding and natural. But a glam vibe is also intact. Perhaps WAZU’s strength comes from the ability to combine the best of ’80s Goth and ’70s Glam Rock while still being relevant to music today.
If you’re fan of New Order, The Cure and Tears for Fears, and you enjoy crying as much as you love dancing, then you should definitely check out the WAZU.
WAZU performs Wednesday, Aug. 15 with Miney Mo at MOTR Pub in Over-the-Rhine. Check out performance times and get venue details here.
