Yes, folks, guitar-and-drum duos still exist in Rock & Roll! In this case, it is the husband and wife team of guitarist and singer Sasha Alcott and drummer Chris Viner. Together, they make up the band When Particles Collide.
Hailing from Bangor, Maine, WPC spends its time “driving around the country with a Punk Rock attitude toward making things happen and a Prog Rock desire for precision and creativity,” according to its bio. Of course, back in the day, the idea of mixing Prog Rock and Punk in any way would make the New York Dolls of the world cringe and shiver. But Alcott and Viner are good-hearted folks with a sense of humor who make it work.
The couple met at Bangor’s Penobscot Theatre Company in 2010. There, they clicked, musically and romantically, when each had a part in noted Rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, about a German transgendered Rock singer. The couple tied the knot on Penobscot Theatre Company’s stage just last month and announced their relocation to the small town of Exeter, N.H., from where they’ll continue to record and tour the country.
Since 2013, When Particles Collide have self-released three EPs and one full-length album. The twosome’s latest EP, EGO, is due this month.
WHEN PARTICLES COLLIDE perform Thursday, July 18 with The Frankl Project at MOTR Pub in Over-the-Rhine. Check out performance times and get venue details here.
