Ray (Elle Fanning) makes the decision to transition from female to male, causing seismic adjustments in her immediate family. Single mother Maggie (Naomi Watts) must track down Ray’s biological father to complete the legal consent form, while Maggie’s mother (Susan Sarandon) and her partner (Linda Emond) bicker and banter about everything from lesbian/feminist rights to pushing Maggie into the deeper waters of independence.
